Tur Dal Kadhi

1 cup tur dal
1 tbsp coriander seeds
1/2″ ginger
5 green chillies
3 Red chillies
12 curry leaves
3 onions, finely chopped
3 tomatoes, finely chopped
1 tbsp cumin seeds
1 tsp red chilli powder
1/2 tsp garam masala powder
1/2 tsp tumeric powder
1 lime, juiced
Oil as required
Salt to taste
Wash and soak dal in tepid water for 45 to an hour.
Grind coriander seeds, ginger, green and red chillies and curry leaves in a mixer / blender.
Coarsely grind the tur dal without adding much water.
Add the ground dal to the above paste and mix well with salt.
Divide the mix into halves.
Fry one half into small fritters / pakodas and set aside.
Heat oil in a heavy bottom vessel and splutter the  cumin seeds.
Add onions and fry till golden brown.
Then add tomatoes and stir until they are soft.
Add to this tumeric powder, garam masala powder and red chilli powder and fry well.
Add the remaining ground dal and keep stirring till nicely fried.
Add water little by little mashing the dal till you reach the required consistency. Allow the dal to cook.
Mix in lemon juice and pakodas and garnish with coriander leaves just before serving.
Best had with chapattis or rotis.
(Dal tends to thinken if it becomes cold so it requires to be served hot)
